Obituary for Aerona "Rona" Wilkie

WILKIE, Aerona "Rona" (née Davies) - Peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, April 11, 2013, in her 89th year after a short illness. Beloved wife of the late Philip. Dearest mother of Christopher (Clare) and Susan Ward (Richard). Cherished Grandma of Sarah, Nigel, Sam, Sebastian and Joseph. Originally from Nantyffyllon, South Wales, Rona served proudly with the BAOR in Europe after WWII. She came to Canada in 1952 where she met and married Philip in Toronto in 1954. An employee (and early female broadcaster) with CBC radio, she was always a lover of literature and proponent of education. Following her marriage, Philip and Rona came to Kingston, which they both loved, to raise their family. Rona also proudly completed her BA at Queen's University as a mature student while teaching nursery school. Following retirement she embraced voluntary work teaching English as a second language to new Canadians. An enthusiastic amateur actress and convivial hostess, Rona particularly valued her many close friendships locally and around the world. Funeral Service to be held at St John's Anglican Church, Portsmouth (41 Church St, Kingston) on Wednesday April 17, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. Interment at Cataraqui Cemetery.
Many thanks to the staff and fellow residents of Fairfield Manor East (Rona loved you all), as well as the medical and other staff at KGH for sensitive recent care. In lieu of flowers, donations in Rona's memory may be made to the church where she and Philip were wed – Dewi Sant Welsh United Church, Toronto or to the charity of your choice. Arrangements entrusted to the Wartman Funeral Home “Kingston Chapel.”
