Obituary for Spencer Neil McDonnell

Spencer Neil McDonnell passed away suddenly at his home on Long Reach, Napanee, on Wednesday, October 12, 2022, in his 53rd year. Spence is survived by his loving wife Lisa Anderson, and cherished son Thomas. Dearly missed by his mother Cathy and the late Neil McDonnell. Caring brother of Shawn (Alison). Son-in-law of Lois McNeill (Hector) and Ken Anderson (Ruth) and brother-in-law of Lori Deschamps (Casey) and Brian Anderson. Fun uncle of Maggie, Ethan, Will, Ben, Mya, Brody and Chloe. He will be deeply missed by many extended family, friends and colleagues.

Spence attended Queen’s University and graduated in 1993 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. He immediately joined Coopers & Lybrand and not long after, became certified as a Chartered Accountant. Respected as a great tax mind, Spence became partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers in 2005 and over the course of his career advised clients in many industries and mentored a generation of accounting colleagues.

Spence grew up in Lindsay and Napanee, later marrying Lisa in 1998. They lived in Toronto and recently made their cottage in Napanee their home where Spence enjoyed the outdoors, fished with son Thomas and Papa Neil, and planned hunting trips with Thomas. He loved spending time on the water, boating and towing kids on the tube for hours. He never missed a good sunset over the Long Reach if he could help it.

An avid sports fan, Spence played hockey growing up and was a lifelong Montreal Canadiens and Blue Jays fan. He had a passion for travel, games, pink shirts and rollercoasters with Thomas. Spence loved fine food and wine and a good party. He shared his warmth, quick wit and laughter with a large group of cherished friends and family who he and Lisa entertained over countless dinners, weekends and trips that created lasting memories. He lived life fully and completely and filled each day with joy.

A celebration of Spence’s life will be held on Thursday, October 27, 2022, from 2 – 5 pm at Doghouse Studios, 99 Dairy Avenue, Napanee, with remembrances at 3pm. In keeping with Spence’s relaxed nature, Hawaiian shirts and Crocs are welcome.
