Obituary for Michael Peter McQuaid

McQUAID, MICHAEL PETER January 8, 1955 – July 2, 2021 It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of our beloved husband, dad, & papa, who was also a devoted son, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. He was our Jack of all trades - Master of many, who passed away with family by his side at Kingston General Hospital, in his 66th year after a short courageous battle with cancer.

He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Leanne (Cullen) McQuaid, who cared for him until the end, his children Caitlin, Cameron (Alicia), Alison (Francis), the apple of his eye - his grandson River, his sisters Carol (Marquis), Teresa (Hughes) & Florence (Rickerby), his sister-in-law’s Dianne (McQuaid) & Krissy (Stagg), Marilyn (Cullen), Micheline (Cullen) & Kathleen (Cullen), his brother-in-law’s Gary (Rickerby), Robert (Cullen), Barrie (Cullen) & Terry (Cullen), his many McQuaid nieces and nephews: Gary, Paula, Lisa, Stefanie, Darlene, Laura Lee, Scott, Julie, John, Melissa, Alana, Darcy & Cara, his Cullen nieces and nephews Eddie, Melanie, Peter, Jamie, Chris & Ryan, his many loving cousins, nieces & nephews-in-law, grandnieces & nephews, friends, and last but not least by his 2 devoted and loyal dogs, Stevie and Dallee.

He was predeceased by his parents (Clara Clarkin McQuaid & John McQuaid); brothers (Donnie, Leo, & Ken McQuaid); brother-in-law (Colin Hughes); sister-in-law, (Anne Daley McQuaid); nephew (Johnny McQuaid); and niece (Lisa McQuaid).

Youngest of seven and born in Charlottetown, PEI, he grew up in Cabbagetown, Toronto. Michael was an athlete, avid learner, hard worker, tinkerer, and first and foremost a family man and friend. He was a protector and provider who was always polite, popular, positive and boy, did he love to dance! They raised their family in Newmarket where he made many lifelong friendships, taught them how to do handstands, coached numerous sports teams, sewed dance costumes, and always supported their children (and his children’s friends) through thick and thin. For those who knew him well, it felt like he was capable of anything, and if he didn’t know how to do something, he learned and practiced through trial and error as his tools were never far out of reach - he was the original inquirer.

Michael had a long career in IT, the early years were spent at BMO and the last 17 years were spent with the Ontario Ministry of Health. He always enjoyed and spoke highly of all his fellow colleagues. Michael loved to travel with his dear Leanne and always displayed great respect and love for the many different cultures of the world. Ten years ago they moved out to Greater Napanee and built their dream house by the lake where Michael loved to play baseball, hockey & golf, drive his boat, play cards, and putter around fixing things. Their neighbours were welcoming from the start and he always enjoyed chatting, going to their events and getting to know them better. Michael had a way of really looking into people’s eyes to show them that he was listening and gave great bear hugs. He was a true model of how to be there for people in their best and worst moments.

A respected, generous and gentle man, loved by all who knew him, Michael leaves his family and friends with many wonderful memories and was a true example of how to be gracious and kind to the end. Thank you to the staff at KGH for their compassion and care. We will love him and miss him forever.
