JOSEPH ANTHONY BENDERAVAGE, A gentleman and a scholar.

Joe died January 26, 2020 in the arms of his sons Angus and Ivor. Alongside Lesley, his wife of 44 years, they accompanied him through a long and arduous illness.

Joe was born in 1937 to Joseph Anthony Benderavage Sr. and Mary Rita Zetusky, of Pennsylvania, a cherished only brother to the late Marie Grissom, the late Emma Marshall, Teresa Adkins and Josephine Dornin. He is remembered with love by the Benderavage, Donald, Duke and Greenland clans.

Joe had a lifelong thirst for knowledge. His interests ranged from ancient history and languages to astrophysics; they spanned the natural sciences, philosophy and the arts. He devoted his life to the education of his sons, whose blossoming into kind, competent human beings has been Joe’s crowning achievement.

In keeping with his passion for science, Joe donated his body to the Department of Biomedical and Molecular Sciences at Queen’s University, his Alma Mater. A celebration of his life is planned for the spring.

Sincere thanks to staff and friends at Providence Manor, to his care angels Jacqueline, Jenna, Lezley and Nancy, and to our beloved Petite Soeur for her steadfast support.

In memory of Joe, we encourage you to enjoy the outdoors, to marvel at nature, to gaze at the sky, and to wonder. Online condolences at

What a kind man. His intelligence and inquisitiveness thrilled me. The best uncle ever!
Photos show oldest sister Gloria and next is Mom (Dolly / Josie) each dancing with Tall Uncle Joe. I like to think he has Gloria and his sisters Emma and Marie with him now.
