Obituary for Scott Finlay

FINLAY, Scott George

Peacefully on the morning of November 19th in his sixty-fifth year, our precious son and brother Scott passed away at Lennox & Addington County General Hospital in Napanee, holding his father’s hand with Mom and brother by his side.

Scott is survived by his parents, Hugh and Rosemary Finlay, and siblings David (Kim), Mark, and Laurie (Ken). Uncle to Adam (Melanie), Mae (Derrick), Gordon (Michele), Ian (Elisa), Samuel, and Emily (Chris), and great uncle to Aidan, Logan, Eilidh, Eoghan, Finlay, Charles, Valley, Oliver, Giulia, Graeme, Jack, and Mackie. Scott is remembered by many cousins, aunts, and uncles.

Scott will be fondly remembered in the hearts and minds of his extended family, many friends, members of his Canadian Ski teams, and everyone at the Napanee Acquired Brain Injury and Rehabilitation Home – otherwise known as “The Finlay House”.

Scott was a graduate of Napanee District Secondary School. He raced competitively in alpine skiing from a very young age practicing at the family operated Nacona Ski Hill, just outside his hometown of Strathcona, Ontario. Scott found considerable success while training and competing in Europe, North and South America. He made many friends on the Ontario Ski Team and among his fellow competitors from around the world.

In 1978, Scott suffered a traumatic brain injury while competing at the Canadian Ski Championships in Lake Louise, Alberta. He would spend the rest of his life battling with the ramifications. His determination, strength, and infectious smile was an inspiration to everyone who met him.

Throughout his life, Scott would constantly receive messages of support and in-person visits from friends, family, team mates, celebrities, and various media outlets who wanted to highlight stories of his courage. Scott loved music as did his whole family and it gave him great happiness.

The Finlay Family would like to extend our sincerest appreciation to the staff of Lennox & Addington County Hospital, Kingston General Hospital, Community nurses, and Community care givers for your outstanding care over the years. “You know who you are”
