Douglas Park Sexsmith, age 82, died peacefully in his home in Kingston, Ontario on December 13, 2016, surrounded by family. Born March 10, 1934 to Ross and Florence. Survived by brothers Robert (Kathryn) of Kingston and William (Patricia) of Vancouver. Predeceased by brother Paul in 1974.

Doug married the love of his life on May 18, 1957 and was devoted to Beverley (Ramsay) for over 60 years. He took his greatest pleasure from his children and grandchildren and was the loving "little guy" providing thoughtful guidance to six strong minded, independent, and devoted daughters, Janice , Kelly, Jill, Pam, Meg, and Kate. He was adored by his grandchildren Victoria Shouldice, Nigel and Julien Sexsmith, and Declan and Liam Brear and he was deeply respected and admired by the spouses and partners of his children and grandchildren.

Doug was an accomplished scholar with engineering degrees from RMC (B.Sc.), McGill (B.Eng.) and MIT (S.M.). He taught at RMC and the University of Toronto. Doug served as VP and Director of James F. MacLaren Limited for 27 years and President of Kostuch Engineering for 16 years; his career took him and his family all over the world, including stints in Nigeria, Libya, and Saudi Arabia. He and Beverley spent 20 years in retirement on the Bay of Quinte and had just recently moved to the next phase of their life in a condo in Kingston.

Generous of spirit and committed to his communities, he gave endless volunteer hours. Some of his many roles included: President of the Consulting Engineers of Ontario, the Brockville Country Club and the Napanee Country Club; Board member of the American Public Works Association, the St. Vincent de Paul Hospital in Brockville and the Napanee Community Foundation ; Chair of the Cancer Society of Brockville, the Thousand Island Development Corp. and the Prince Edward Lennox & Addington Community Futures Development Corporation.

An avid sportsman and natural leader, he was the captain of the RMC hockey team, played baseball in his youth and later coached his daughters’ teams, and loved golfing only a little more than he loved watching the pros play on TV. A gracious host who loved to cook, Doug always provided guests and family with wit, charm, and lively conversation. A devoted storyteller, he loved both telling and a hearing a great (or really terrible) joke.

A celebration of life will be held in January in Toronto on Sunday, January 15, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. at the Thornhill Golf & Country Club, 7994 Yonge St., Thornhill, ON. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the MS Society or to a charity of your choice.
