Condolence From: Donna Publicover
Condolence: Dear Amy and Tracy and Families, Days and weeks have passed and I am certain that you have returned to life’s routine, however, please continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends during this time. Beth was a selfless individual who knew how to give encouraging words or unexpected help to anyone who needed it. Her energy and friendly/loving personality was so incredibly contagious. Her dedication not only to her family but to SHAID and all that she believed in was truly inspiring. I still have and cherish a sweet small original little fisherman figurine that she handcrafted in her unique style. You gave it to me as a gift when I was your teacher at Pentz Elementary. She was so creative as well. Even the smallest detail on that figurine is perfect. I remember commenting to her how wonderful the sculpture was and of course, she replied in her modest way that it was something she just did for a pasttime! Always unpretentious and humble! Her presence made you happy! “What we have once enjoyed, we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes part of us.” – Helen Keller. Thinking of you now and always, Donna Publicover, Kris and Kody

Condolence: I know it’s late but I am just finding out about Beth’s passing. Your mom and I are first cousins. My Dad and her Mom were brother and sister. I spent a day with your mom last Sept just before she left for Ontario. It was a nice warm day and we spent it at her home and down by the river talking about families and life. I know you may not know of me but I cherish the memories of Uncle Charlie, Aunt Beta, Beth and Brenda and the times we spent in Windsor and also at the summer cottage. Please accept my deepest condolences on the passing of a wonderful kind lady who reminded me so much of her mom.

Condolence: Dear Amy and Tracy and Families, I just heard of Beth’s passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your families on the loss of your mother and grandmother. Beth was truly a lovely, kind, intelligent and special lady who loved her children and grandchildren so much. Her genuine laughter and smile could brighten up anyone’s day. Her care, concern and love for the welfare of her own beloved pets and all animals was unconditional. She taught others by example. I often admired her quiet skill--there was never an animal that she could not seem to handle. She was truly a marvelous person! Both of you, Amy and Tracy, are a reflection of her greatness! I still remember sitting down with her at Parent-Teacher Conferences at Pentz Elementary and we talked about how well you were doing in my classroom oh so long ago! May you find comfort and strength from one another and from all of the wonderful memories that will keep her in your hearts and minds forever. You are in our thoughts and our hearts now and always. Please accept our sincere condolences during this difficult time. Donna Publicover- one of your teachers at Pentz Elementary, Kris and Kody and Tazz, our rescued cat.

Condolence: I first met Beth over 30 years ago through SHAID. She was definitely a special person. Over the years when I'd see her around town we'd always have a chat and I'd go away feeling somehow uplifted. I think it was her positive attitude and how it showed in her smile and eyes. The animals were so important to her. I don't know how she managed them all, but she did. What a lady! She made the world a better place. Our deep condolences go out to all her family and friends.

Condolence: Gail Zwicker Wrote This Tribute about Beth Kent I shall share her words and photos. Beth shall be missed. The cover photo for the Nova Scotia Humane Society is Alvin (or later became Allie when it was discovered she was a female). Alli was a meat bird, destined as someone's dinner. She loved bananas, dust baths and making happy turkey sounds. Alli lived out the rest of her life being loved by Beth Kent, one of our founders. Beth had been ill with ovarian cancer and sadly passed away on November 6, 2018. Beth made an impact on many lives both human and animal. She was involved in the Lunenburg County SPCA back in the 80’s and was a founding member of S.H.A.I.D. Tree Shelter Society. She did numerous classroom presentations, a weekly local cable television show, and weekly articles in newspaper. She worked tirelessly for baby and injured animals. She was often told that she should have written a book on the adventures that she had in rescuing and caring for these animals. Stories of transporting a seal, raising and releasing raccoons as well as a lobster who had been rescued from an Ontario grocery store and flown to Nova Scotia to be freed in the Atlantic Ocean are just a few examples. Highlights in her travels were a trip to Sable Island as well as Farm Sanctuary in Watkins Glen, NY. She also worked on issues dealing with animals used for food, circuses, dissection, fur, the seal hunt, cosmetic testing, xeno transplantation. But the topic of food animals was one that was dear to her the most. In the last of her life, she really wanted to make a difference and as a result she sponsored Esther the Wonder Pig’s dads for a presentation at the Halifax Central Library in Halifax. This is an article that she wrote in the summer of 1998: Man has removed himself from our place in the zoology of this earth. We do not work with nature but attempt to control it. We do not function on the basis of natural selection as do the wolf or coyote. We (our species) destroy the prime animals. We confine entire species, and even alter them to better serve us. We have created a society in which we can exist easily without killing yet we continue to plunder for profit, fashion, entertainment and to satisfy our appetite for flesh. Our predation fills no niche in the total ecology. If face, I have heard it said, and I agree, that Man is the one species that could disappear from earth without being missed. Surely if we do manage to survive, our interaction with all of nature, including non-human animals will be of utmost important in an environmental aware society. Hopefully more people will honor her memory by choosing a plant based diet. After all the kindness that she has shown so many animals, it is the best that we can do to honor her memory. We loved her and will miss her deeply.

Condolence: Tracy and Amy and families - our hearts go out to you! Beth we both adored you, and Peter gives that out to very few people. We remember you for your infectious laugh, incredible smile and open, beautiful loving heart. I remember one of the first times I visited your house you had rescued a little family of flying squirrels and they were in your downstairs powder room. What a beautiful experience! You taught me so much about unconditional love. You were like a mother to me and were always there for me. Just remembering the wonderful times we had together. I was so privileged to visit Farm Sanctuary with you in 2011 on our way to see Amy. What a beautiful experience it was. Beth you have left a legacy, of fun laughter and incredibly important work for saving all animals and birds and educating people. You will always be in our hearts. I love you dear heart. Peter loves you dearly and we realized last evening that most of our precious felines have come from you either directly or indirectly from Shaid when it was managed. Even our beloved Charlotte from the TNR... Thank you!! I know you are at peace and beyond the rainbow bridge with your many beloved animals. xoxoxoxo So much love, Mary Jane and Peter.

Condolence: My deepest condolences to everyone who love Beth, which there had to be many. Beth was an amazing woman with the kindest of heart. Her beautiful smile and laugh was contagious. I was telling a friend about her on the way home from work I remember working at a charity yard sale with her and everyone was tired and wanted to clean up and be gone but people would not leave when suddenly this booming voice started yelling for everyone to get out. I remember this so clearly because Beth is always soft spoken and sweet, but It did not take long for the room to empty. Take charge and get things done. You will be missed Beth
