Condolence: Mary, Julie, and Andy, So very sorry for your loss. Ernie was one of the kindest, most decent and genuine people I have met. I recall his hilarious performance with fellow VP Beth Alkenbrack (another of the good ones)at the Christmas assembly. "Doin' What Comes Naturally", if I remember correctly, was their much acclaimed rendition. I've submtttied a photo on the "Your Life Moments" site showing my students presenting him with a quilt they made for him when he left NDSS. The expressions on the students' faces say it all. Miss you, Ernie.

Condolence: Mary, Julie, Andy and Family; Our deepest sympathies to you all at this time. Ernie always had a story to tell and a great sense of humour. Ernie and Mary made me feel right at home when I stayed with them during my teaching round at the high school many years ago. I was so glad we could have a nice phone chat a few weeks ago. Even then, he had a light hearted sense of humour. He will be missed! Take care! Christine & Scott Chambers xo

Condolence From: Sean Casey and Family
Condolence: To Mary and Family; For you and your family you have lost a rock of your family. Ernie - 'Mr. Doughty, Brother Ernie, my friend', he too was my rock, as a kid, as student, as a brother and as a friend Ernie was always able to anchor me when the time was needed. He was there to guide me when times were hard, at school and with life. As a brother he made the loss of my dad and our brother easier. If was not for him we would not of been able to give my dad/our brother a memorable candle lit send off. For that I owe him a great heart-filled thanks. I will always cherish my memories him as an educator, funny/serious/sad . Ernie was always the rock is so many of our lives. He will be missed, but not forgotten. Although he was not a sailor he deserves the following: 'May the wind be at his back with following seas', until we meet again.

Condolence: Ernie had profound influence on all who knew him, the many students he mentored, his working colleagues which is where I fit in, members of the community. His legacy will live on through our memories of him. I feel very privileged to have known him, not only as a teaching colleague at NDSS for several decades, and as director of the community band back in my days of being part of it, but also as friend and fellow historian of local issues. All of us who had associations with him are greatly enriched by his presence in our lives. My deepest sympathies to you Mary, and to your children and grandchildren. Fran Koch

Condolence: My deepest condolences to Mary and her family. I was in the first classes Ernie taught when he came to NDSS to begin the music program and like many of his students there was always a special bond between us. He was a teacher, a mentor and a friend. I always enjoyed his surprise visits when he was travelling to visit family in Ottawa or meeting up at the local playhouse. It was always a joy to reconnect. His humour, energy and friendship will be greatly missed.

Condolence: Our deepest condolences to the Doughty family. Ernie was an amazing role model to hundreds of NDSS students. His commitment to the Napanee community was inspiring. But the Ernie that Rob and I knew best was as Andy’s dad. Quick with a smile and a twinkle of mischief in his eye. Ernie lived his life with a passion to learn. We will miss his stories of his adventures. Hoping Mary, Andy and Laurie, Julie and Greg, and grandchildren can find comfort in their memories. Hugs, Rob and Laurie Brookfield
