Obituary for Michael James Muntain

Muntain, Michael James

Mike passed away peacefully at home, on March 3, 2017. He passed at the age of 54 with his beloved wife and sister by his side, after a courageous battle with cancer. Mike Muntain, loving husband and best friend of Julia (nee Harper) was predeceased by his dear mother Joyce Muntain and his precious puppy Sheba. He leaves behind his dear father, Donald Muntain, his four loving sisters, Chrissy (Tom) Malo , Cathy (Cory) Waldron, Laurie (Brad) Korstad , and Brenda (Rob) Alexander. Also, his Mother and Father-in-law Elmer and Joan Harper and sister-in-law Laurie (Paul) Mckercher and brother in law Michael Harper. Mike will be sadly missed by many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Also, his precious cats, Mister and Peanut. Mike was loved by so many friends who considered him family.

He was born in Regina Saskatchewan and grew up on Vancouver Island. He was always involved in sports. He was a goalie in Lacrosse, an avid skier, and even participated in a Bathtub race one year! He was a drummer in the Sea Cadets marching band. In 1979, the family moved to Red Deer Alberta where he worked on the pipeline and volunteered as a Ski Patrol and taught handicap children to ski. In 1987, he moved to Toronto, then to Kingston, where he met Julia in 1989.

Mike’s legacy is the work he did for,“The Face For Every Name”, a project he started after being inspired by a YouTube video called 1,400 Candles. The video depicted the children of Holten, in the Netherlands, placing candles on the graves of Canadian Soldiers resting there. Mike made it his mission to find a face for every Soldier buried there. He worked tirelessly towards his goal, changing the lives of many families. He forged meaningful friendships with the Canadian soldier’s family members, who contacted him from all over the world. A very noble legacy left by a man who deeply cared for others and always went above and beyond expectations to help anyone in need. He will be deeply missed by so many.

No service is planned as of this date. Special thanks to Nicole Mckercher.
