Marion Jean Duke (Roberts) passed away on July 12, 2016 at the age of 82 years in Kingston, Ontario. She was the beloved wife of the late Charles Robert Duke and the loving mother of three daughters: Cynthia Joy Hansen (Randall) of Syracuse, Utah, Deborah Lynne Duke of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, and Elizabeth Anne Duke-Gibbs (Graeme) of Amherstview, Ontario. She had three grandchildren: Matthew George (Gillian), Stephanie Chrobak (Jason) and Robert George and one great grandchild, Kai Chrobak.

She leaves brothers and sisters: Horace Roberts (Ethyl), Joyce Rogers (Frank), David Roberts (Julie) and George Roberts (Dawn), and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by parents, Idris and Myrtle Roberts and sister Shirley Gillis (Don).

Marion was born in Fredericton, and lived there most of her life. She graduated from Fredericton High School and received an associate degree from U.N.B. in education. She taught night school at Fredericton High School, as well as worked for the Provincial Government and the University of New Brunswick.

Marion took great pride in being a citizen of Fredericton, New Brunswick. She enjoyed socializing with neighbours in Sunshine Gardens where she lived for 44 years, and raised her three girls. She took great pride in maintaining her home and garden.
In her youth Marion loved rocking the dance floor to the big band sounds and ice skating on an outside rink to music. Music was her great joy. As a young person Marion attended music camp and played the coronet in the Salvation Army Band. With her sister Shirley, she would often sing duets live on the local radio station. An active member of the YMCA Y Zn up Club in her youth, she thoroughly enjoyed participating in all their activities, especially the social teas. A child of a Welsh father, Marion took great pride in her heritage. She was a loyal monarchist and a loyal friend, delighting in corresponding with those she loved, and remembering their birthdays and special occasions. Marion had a great sense of humour, pride in her family and always displayed great courage in the face of adversity. She took pride in her appearance and had a flair for fashion. Traveling was one of her enjoyments and she visited Europe and many parts of the United States and Canada. She loved to recite poetry and taught her children to speak with expression and to enunciate each word. Marion always kept up with current events and read the newspaper from cover to cover daily. She was a strong scholar winning many academic prizes as a student. In her later years, Marion attended aquasize regularly and enjoyed eating out with friends she met there. Live theatre and attending concerts were among her pleasures. She loved dogs, bird watching and young people, and had a special fondness for babies and young children. Marion was a devoted mother to her three children. When they were little, she sewed all their clothing and Halloween costumes. She was an excellent seamstress and particularly skilled at smocking. She encouraged their pursuit of a higher education and took great interest in their activities and was very supportive. Her greatest desire was for them to be happy. She always said that her favourite gifts were the ones that they hand made for her and she treasured them throughout her life. She was mother, father, advisor, counselor, friend. She always made her children feel safe and loved. God and faith were always in her uppermost thoughts and she attended church regularly. She loved to sing the old hymns. Marion will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Funeral services will be at 6:00 p.m., Friday July 22 at The First Congregational Church of Fredericton (Morningate Church, 74 Morningate Drive in Fredericton), Reception to follow at the church and internment to take place at the Fredericton Wilmot Rural Cemetery Extension on the Woodstock Road.
