Obituary for Wayne (Kenneth Albert) Tompkins

Retired Director, Leeds & Grenville County Board of Education, May 1, 1931 - June 2, 2016. One month after the loss of his beloved wife, Isabelle, Wayne slipped away at Helen Henderson Care Centre, Amherstview. Dearly loved father of Philip (Julie) of Kingston, Heather Quance (Michael) of Kingston and Kathryn Tompkins (Bryan) of Thornbury. Much loved and respected Grandpa of Trevor and Nicholas, Tyler and Graham, and Theo. Dear brother of Gerald (Joan) Tompkins and brother-in-law of Milree (Jerry Bass) and the late Douglas Latimer. Uncle of Deborah Caron (Michel) and David. Son of the late Ken and Bertha Tompkins, Newburgh and son-in-law of the late Campbell and Hazel Wilson, Milton. Wayne was a thoughtful and dedicated educator who was passionate about his profession. He started his career as a newly-minted teacher in a one-room schoolhouse in Wooler, Ontario. From there he moved on to a variety of teaching positions, then to superintendent and director roles in Frontenac and Leeds & Grenville counties. Upon retirement, he took a short break before beginning a second career as Executive Director of the Canadian Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) and President of the Retired Teachers Association of Ontario (RTO). He was an active member of Edith Rankin Memorial United Church and its choir, the Kinsmen and the Senators clubs of Kingston. We all loved and admired him very much and we will miss him dearly. Heartfelt thanks to Wayne's Helen Henderson family who cared for him so well and lovingly. The family will receive friends at the WARTMAN FUNERAL HOME "Kingston Chapel" (980 Collins Bay Rd) on Wednesday, June 8, 2016 from 12 noon until 1:30 p.m., followed by a funeral service in the Chapel. Reception to follow service. Interment at Newburgh Cemetery. In memory of Wayne, memorial donations to the Parkinson Society or the Gibson Family Health Care Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
